It's the announcement beauty professionals and people desperate to use their services have been waiting for: as of Monday 13th July, beauty salons (including nail bars and massage studios) are allowed to open their doors again.

With self care more important than ever, the news feels like it's been a long time coming, especially since the opening of pubs and restaurants was prioritised, with only hairdressers given the go ahead to open on 4th July.

As lockdown continues to ease, businesses are having to adapt the way they work in order to ensure a 'Covid-secure' service. For the beauty industry, this is a challenge, but not impossible, and well-stocked PPE, floor markings and temperature testing are some of the many measures being put in place for Monday's much-anticipated re-launch.

But, it's not quite as simple as rocking up for your favourite pre-lockdown treatment. A phased approach means some treatments are still very much off the menu...

What beauty treatments are not allowed?

Any treatments on a person's face are still considered "high risk." This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Face waxing, sugaring or threading services

  • Facial treatments

  • Advanced facial (electrical or mechanical)

  • Eyelash treatments

  • Make-up application

  • Dermarolling

  • Dermaplaning

  • Microblading

  • Electrolysis on the face

  • Eyebrow treatments

So, what beauty treatments are allowed from Monday?

Any treatment that involves the body, including manicures, pedicures, leg or bikini waxing.

The fact that "simple beard trims" are allowed from Monday (but not lash or brow treatments) is a sticking point for many beauty therapists desperate to get clients back in their chairs again, with Boris Johnson receiving accusations of sexism following what appeared to be a delay in reopening the largely female-driven beauty sector.

But for now, watch this space (while enjoying that well-earned pedicure).
