Turning a 50-year-old university with breeze-block walls and lino floors into a liveable space is hard enough, but two students at Texas State University managed to transform their 16-feet-by-16-feet room into living space fit for Instagram - all for just around £400 ($500).

From the looks of it, you’d think that Adeline Vela and Skylar Bantz had been planning this room transformation for years, but the two members of TSU's class of 2021 just recently met in a Facebook chat with other college students.

“After chatting we thought it would be a great idea to become roommates,” Bantz told Teen Vogue. “We both had a similar style so we decided to focus first on a colour scheme and go from there. We wanted something that was inviting, simple, but still elegant and comfortable.”

In addition to swapping out the room’s beds to the lofted ones you see here using a uni-approved company, the pair relied on other easy décor swaps like a faux-brick removable wallpaper to elevate their space.

“Since we were unable to paint the room this gave the entire room a more inviting feel,” Bantz said. “You can find that online anywhere but it's important that you [make sure its] fire retardant if you are planning on putting it in a dorm room. We also used peel-and-stick marble contact paper on the desk that made it look like in marble desk and you can find this as well online.”

They also swapped out their desk chairs with monogrammed acrylic versions and turned the area underneath of one the beds into an entertainment centre complete with a Keurig Coffee Maker and a printer.

While the transformation wasn’t simple - Bantz’s mom Sheila Ybarra told the San Antonio Express-News that it took seven people 20 hours to complete - it was surprisingly affordable. Ybarra said that the dorm makeover only took about $500 to complete and was split between the parents of the two students.

"We are pretty budget friendly, so most of the items we got were from IKEA, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond and Amazon," Ybarra told the San Antonio Express-News.

While Bantz commented on her mum’s now-viral Facebook post about the dorm transformation that they were told to remove the accent light attached to the ceiling vent by their RA, the university has asked the students if they could stop by and take pictures to possibly feature on their website.

“We just wanted to showcase our personalities and we wanted it to be a home away from home,” Bantz told Teen Vogue. “I just wanted it to be a space that was inviting. We wanted it to be our space.”
