Beards were out in force at the Oscars 2013, with some of the biggest names in Hollywood jumping on the facial hair trend.

Dubbed the 'power-beard', male stars have been enjoying the opportunity to accessories with something new, taking eyes (occasionally and for not very long) off their female counterparts in their fabulous dresses.

Beards were seen on Argo star and director Ben Affleck, on the producer of the same film and all round Hollywood ledge George Clooney, who could both be credited (or blamed) for bringing chin decoration back to the mainstream.

A silver fox for as long as we can remember, George's silver-speckled tash and beard combo gives him rather an air of dignity we think.

Hugh Jackman also sported a neat beard as he performed with his Les Miserables co-stars in a live rendition from the film.

But sadly for beard-fans, Daniel Day Lewis appeared clean shaven in contrast to his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln, for which he's up for an award as Best Actor.

We've also seen beards recently on Ryan Gosling, Jake Gyllenhaal, Johnny Depp and Justin Timberlake.

Aside from make them look rather sophisticated, perhaps the men of Hollywood are in the know on the beard as the latest anti-aging treatment. According to dermatologists, having a beard can actually help keep the skin looking younger and ward off wrinkles.

This is because the hair follicles make the skin stronger and less liable to damage. So maybe that's how George has kept his youthful demeanor for so long, despite the grey hairs.
