The Traitors has left viewers convinced there is a hidden twist yet to be revealed after three contestants were eliminated just minutes into the new BBC series.

Aired on January 1, the hit gameshow returned for season three with Claudia Winkleman reprising her role as the host. Viewers were introduced to 25 stars who are set to vie for up to £120,000 in the game of betrayal.

However, as the contestants were heading to the Scottish Highlands, where the series is set, their train came to a halt and Claudia announced that each of the three carriages had ten minutes to sacrifice one member of the group in order to win £10,000.

Flustered by the shocking twist, the group struggled to decide on a method of eviction, resulting in three contestants volunteering for the sacrifice.

In the end, they managed to secure £7,000 for the final prize pot, although they lost £3,000 due to their three-minute decision time.

Alexander, a former British diplomat from London was among the stars axed in the first episode. He left alongside Fozia, a community development manager from Birmingham and Jack, a landscaper from Yorkshire.

Although they voluntarily stepped off the train, the trio were holding out for hope that their forfeit was worth something. Viewers have similarly been trying to figure out what will happen to the evicted castmates.

Eagle-eyed fans have taken to social media to share their disbelief, with many claiming there is another twist yet to come.

On X, formerly Twitter, one eagle-eyed viewer predicted: "The three who 'sacrifice' themselves will definitely be returning. There's no way they'll just be upping and leaving." (sic)

A second person wrote: "There's got to be a catch", while a third said: "Those 3 [will] prob turn up in a limo. Train journey ended not their game." (sic).

Yet another person shared: “What if the 3 people they chose earlier are given like new roles to help the faithfuls out? Idk what but could be a good new twist.” (sic).

A fifth viewer wrote: "There has to be a second layer to this train twist SURELY", with another person echoing: "The three that got off the train. There has to be a twist surely." (sic).

Season three's first official banishment was Yin, a 34-year-old doctor of communication from Berkshire. Traitors Minah, Lisa and Armani murdered her out of fear she would use her intelligence to unmask them.

The Traitors returns tomorrow on BBC1 at 8pm.
