BBC Strictly's Amy Dowden issues four-word response about returning to show after cancer battle
Welsh dancing sensation Amy Dowden is back on Strictly Come Dancing, calling her return a "celebration" after she was diagnosed with breast cancer over one year ago. After being diagnosed back in May 2023, the adored 34-year-old professional took a break from her dancing duties but has now returned to the dance floor, partnering with JLS superstar JB Gill, 37 and waltzing her way back into our affections.
In a recent interview, Amy opened up about her return to the show and explained that it felt like "home". Speaking to Closer magazine, she said: "It's been such a celebration. It's so lush. I feel like I'm home. We've worked so hard over the last few weeks on spectacular group numbers, I'm just so excited for the 20th year to be hitting your screens."
In February 2024, the Strictly pro revealed that she had "no evidence of disease" following a check. In June it was announced that she would be returning to this year's series of the show. Amy stands as a beacon of positivity post-recovery, surrounded by friends and family like her other half, Ben Jones.

Looking back on tough times during her recovery, she explained: "It's so surreal. I can't believe the place I was in this time last year to what I am now. There were so many times when I didn't think it was going to be possible. I'm just really proud of myself. I hope it gives others going through treatment hope and courage."
Having graced the dance floor with famous faces including McFly's Tom Fletcher, 39, and EastEnders' James Bye, 40, Amy also shared some words of wisdom for this year's celebrity contestants. No matter the feedback from judges Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel-Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, and Anton Du Beke, she encouraged them all to "enjoy every second" on the glittering stage, reports the Mirror.
"Your going to be taken on a ride of a lifetime. It's fabulous, it's fun and it's full of sparkle. Just embrace and enjoy every second of opportunity of a lifetime. And don't take yourself too seriously - just go out there and enjoy it," she said.
Meanwhile, earlier this month OK! spoke to Amy while at the National Television Awards. “It’s just so brilliant to be back,” she said, speaking of her return to Strictly. “It feels wonderful to be dancing, which is what I love more than anything, and celebrating that – and the amazing show that is Strictly in its 20th year.”
She also opened up on how much she’s been through in the last 16 months, and how it has changed her approach to life. “I’m just so lucky to have got through cancer,” she added. “I say, don’t take tomorrow for granted. We don’t know what’s around the corner. So be present, be in the moment, do what you love – and most importantly, spend time with the people you love.”
