BBC One's Miss Austen full cast for period drama starring Keeley Hawes and Rose Leslie

Period dramas are a Sunday night tradition with popular series including ITV1's Downton Abbey to BBC One's Poldark. The latest period drama to grace our screens is Miss Austen, following Jane Austen's sister and niece after her death.

The drama is based on the book by Gill Hornby and features a very impressive cast including Keeley Hawes and Rose Leslie. The BBC has hinted that the show "takes a literary mystery Cassandra Austen notoriously burning her famous sister Jane's letters and reimagines it as a fascinating, witty and heart-breaking story of sisterly love, while creating in Cassandra a character as captivating as any Austen heroine".

Keeley Hawes as Cassandra Austen

Keeley Hawes shot to fame when she played Zoe Reynolds in the BBC series Spooks and has gone on to star in Line of Duty and Bodyguard. She is playing Jane Austen's sister, Cassandra Austen, who burns all of Jane's personal letters and the drama explores why.

Synnove Karlsen as young Cassandra Austen

Upcoming star Synnove Karlsen plays the young Cassandra Austen, who we see in flashbacks during the series. She has starred in the 2021 film Last Night in Soho and the 2023 series Bodies.

Patsy Ferran as Jane Austen

Playing the famous and mysterious author Jane Austen is Patsy Ferran. She has done a lot of work on stage including A Streetcar Named Desire and Treasure Island. Patsy has also starred in the 2022 series Life After Life.

Rose Leslie as Isabella Fowle

Known for her roles in Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones, Rose Leslie is playing Isabella Fowle. Isabella is the niece of Cassandra and she is about to lose her home following her father's death.

Cassandra comes to her aide but is also there to find a hidden bundle of private letters which, in the wrong hands, she fears could destroy Jane’s reputation.

Mirren Mack as Dinah

Playing Dinah, the very loyal and opinionated servant of Isabella, is Mirren Mack. Mirren has played Florence in Sex Education and starred in Dalgliesh and The Witcher: Blood Origin.

Phyllis Logan as Mrs Austen

Another Downton Abbey star in Miss Austen, is Phyllis Logan who is playing Mrs Austen, Jane and Cassandra's mother. She is also known for her roles in the Christmas film Nativity! and the TV series Guilt.

Kevin McNally as Mr Austen

Film star Kevin McNally is playing Mr Austen, Jane and Cassandra's father. Kevin is best known for playing Joshamee Gibbs in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. He has also starred in The Crown and Unforgotten.

Jessica Hynes as Mary Austen

Mary Austen is the sister in-law of Jane and Cassandra, and Mary is also interested in Jane’s letters but for different reasons to Cassandra. Mary is interested in acquiring the letters between Eliza (her sister) and Jane as she sees an opportunity to control and tell the story of the Austen legacy, which in Mary’s mind predominantly revolves around her late husband, the writer James Austen.

She is played by Jessica Hynes who is known for Am I Being Unreasonable? and the films Paddington 2 and Paddington in Peru.

Alfred Enoch as Mr Lidderdale

Mr Lidderdale is the local doctor, who has a little history with Isabella Fowle and the Fowle family. He is played by the Harry Potter star Alfred Enoch who is also known for his roles in Sherlock and The Couple Next Door.

Max Irons as Henry Hobday

Henry is a love interest for Cassandra Austen, and when we first meet Henry, he is in his 30s, he is a devotee of science and a bit of a philosopher. He is set to star in Young Sherlock and also starred in The White Queen.
