BBC The One Show host forced to intervene as guest takes unexpected turn
The One Show's Alex Scott had to step in when co-host Clara Amfo highlighted time constraints following an interview that ran over.
On Wednesday's episode of the BBC hit show, viewers saw Alex Scott, 39 and co-star Clara Amfo, 40, welcome First Dates star Fred Sirieix and EastEnders actress Tracy-Ann Oberman.
Delving into his latest book, Fred reminisced about his youth and love for Britain. Alex kicked off the chat stating: "We know how proud you are of your home country but you are an honorary Brit."
Fred unfolded the tale of his cross-Channel journey, saying: "I came here when I was 20 so I've been in the UK for 32 years, which is longer than I've been in France and my love affair with the UK started when I was 14. I loved speaking in English and I was writing poetry in English and I loved the idea of living my life in English."
He further shared a teen memory from an exchange visit filled with youthful infatuation, explaining: "I remember going to an assembly and I saw so many girls. I loved it because it was freedom. There was this one girl and I was in love with her. Well I was 14 so as in love as you can be at 14 and when I came back home my parents bought guinea pigs for me and my brother.", reports Wales Online.
The studio erupted with laughter as Alex, amused and bewildered, inquired: "Fred, where are we going, what's going on?"
Turning his attention back to the book, he noted: "So the book really is about what the French think about the Brits and my adventure in the UK from the time I arrived to now. We have so many similarities but at the same time there are so many differences."
When Alex probed about his family's reaction, Fred shared: "Well my parents were not really too keen but I was so keen on coming to the UK I got a one way ticket and I loved it from the moment I arrived."
He delved into his experiences: "I didn't go and live where there were a lot of French people, I just got stuck straight away into the culture and the people."
The segment was cut short as time ran out on the show. Mid-sentence, Fred was interrupted by Alex who said with urgency: "Sorry Fred we are going to have to tell everyone that they can buy your book right now.! ".
Wrapping up, Clara lamented: "Sadly there is never enough time but that means that we have had a great time so sadly that is all for tonight."
The One Show airs weekdays on BBC One and iPlayer
