BBC Breakfast’s Charlie Stayt, 61, had to apologise – and got a ticking off from co-presenter Naga Munchetty – after he admitted he had made up a story for the breakfast time news show on Thursday 13 June.

The two hosts were discussing new airport rules at some UK airports that mean drivers will have to pay a fee to drop off or collect a passenger from a flight. London Stansted, Manchester, Newcastle and London Gatwick are among the airports that charge for dropping off. The British Travel Association have previously said the fees are “unfair and excessive” and reportedly earn airports £300 million a year.

BBC reporter Ben Boulous joined the discussion to explain how new rules mean charges at some airports are incurred in certain areas after just 10 minutes.

To help Ben explain how drivers could avoid the charge and take a car to the airport for free, Charlie asked him for advice on how to offer his friend Barry a lift to the airport without getting fined.

Naga interrupted to ask Charlie: “When’s Barry’s next trip? Just to make sure he’s organised.”

Charlie then had to admit that he had invented Barry on air. “Erm, Barry’s made up. He’s not a real person,” he confessed, to which Naga responded: “You’re such a spoilsport!”

Charlie apologised immediately, and offered his services as a taxi driver to anyone watching named Barry. One fan quickly responded: “Me mate and I (Barry) are away later Charlie boy. Get the engine running, need a lift.”

It’s not the first time that Naga Munchetty has jokingly told off one of her co-hosts on BBC Breakfast. On Friday 29 March, sports presenter Mike Bushell told her that she’d “missed the memo” after he noticed that himself, host Ben Thompson and reporter Katie, who was live at Manchester Airport for a report on Easter getaways, were all wearing pink but Naga was not.

She did not appear very thrilled by the joke, after Mike said: “At least Ben got the memo! Katie, us two, Naga?” She responded by snapping that if they had “bothered” to inform her of the pink theme, she would have matched her outfit as well.

Fans of the show were quick to notice her gruff reply. One person wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: "Wow Naga is grumpy this morning, is it because she's having to work the Bank Holiday," followed by a laughing emoji.
