High powered divorce lawyer drama The Split is returning for a third and final series, the BBC has announced.

Fans of Nicola Walker (let's face it, who isn't?) will be delighted to know we'll be getting an update on her character Hannah and how she's facing life after the bombshells of season two.

The second series, which aired last year, was the the third most watched drama series on BBC iPlayer in 2020 - averaging over 6 million viewers and over 19 million streams.

So what's in store for season three?

The Split season 3: What will it be about?

After a devastating end to season two as Hannah and Nathan's marriage fell apart, we join the couple ten months on in the rubble of their previously rock-solid 20 year marriage.

Both lawyers have been respectfully negotiating their separation and seem to have reached an amicable agreement, but Hannah becomes acutely aware of what she's about to lose.

But when a shocking revelation dramatically changes the stakes, any hope of remaining amicable vanishes. Is their split too deep to repair?

The Split creator Abi Morgan explains: "It’s great to be back writing for the Defoe Family, and to dive once more into to the complications of their lives and those of their clients.

"In the final series of this bittersweet trilogy, Hannah faces the heartbreak of her own divorce, and the fight to save her family and her marriage. Siblings clash, past mistakes are exposed and hearts are broken as Noble Hale Defoe notches up more billable hours in the divorce capital of the world.”

Lucy Richer, Executive Producer for the BBC, adds: "The Split is one of our most-loved and most-talked about drama series and we’re thrilled to be back in production with Series 3.

"As ever, Abi Morgan’s incredible writing sparkles with truth and honesty, wit and heartbreak. It is fantastic to be back with the Defoes, with Hannah and Nathan facing their biggest challenge yet - how to survive the break up of their marriage, and navigate their own divorce."

The Split season 3: Who's in it?

Nicola Walker, Stephen Mangan, Annabel Scholey, Fiona Button, Deborah Findlay and Chukwudi Iwuji will be returning, with show bosses confirming more casting soon.

Nicola says of the final series: "I can’t wait to be back in the Defoe Family, we are all looking forward to the journey Abi has planned for us. I don’t know if Hannah will cling to the wreckage or walk away, but I do know it’s going to be a fantastic ride."

The Split season 3: Who's directing?

Dee Koppang O'Leary is on board as lead director this season. Her most recent successes include Bridgerton and The Crown. Name sounds familiar? She's the wife of TV presenter Dermot O'Leary.

The Split season 3: When’s it on TV?

It could be coming to BBC iPlayer and BBC One later in 2021, but we may have to wait until 2022.

The Split airs on BBC One.
