The BBC just announced the release date for their new crime documentary, High: Confessions of an Ibiza Drug Mule. The series tells the story of Michaella McCollum who was arrested in Peru in August 2013 alongside Melissa Reid after they tried to smuggle £1.5 million worth of cocaine in their suitcases.

Their arrest caught the attention of news outlets across the world, and the pair quickly became known as the 'Peru Two'. After a highly publicised court case, McCollum (originally from Northern Ireland) and Reid (from Scotland) were both sentenced to seven years at a maximum security prison in Peru.

In the five-part series, McCollum tells the story of her time in prison, as well as how she negotiated an early release and coped with the international press coverage. The documentary also includes exclusive interviews with McCollum's friends and family.

The official show synopsis reads: "Aged 19, Michaella McCollum boarded her first ever flight for her first foreign holiday in Ibiza. Just a few weeks later she was arrested at Lima airport in Peru after failing to smuggle more than a million pounds worth of cocaine in her suitcase.

"Told in her own words, McCollum recounts the extraordinary story of how she became infamous worldwide as one half of the Peru Two. From how she was recruited as a cartel drugs mule and came to be arrested, tried and jailed in one of the most notorious maximum security prisons in Peru, to the even more extraordinary story of how she got herself out again," (via Tyla).
