BBC acquires Swedish crime drama with The Bridge star
The BBC has announced two new Swedish crime dramas coming soon.
End of Summer, based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Anders de la Motte, will star Midsommar and The Bridge actor Julia Ragnarsson and The Sandhamn Murders' Erik Enge.
The six-part psychological thriller is set in 1984 and follows the disappearance of five-year-old Billy in rural Sweden. The synopsis states: "Two decades later, Billy's sister Vera (Ragnarsson), meets a hauntingly familiar young man (Enge), which forces her to unravel the truth behind her brother's disappearance."
Directed by Young Wallander's Jens Jonsson and The Bridge's Henrik Georgsson, the series was produced by Viaplay with Harmonica Films, SF Studios and Film i Skåne.
The series was written by Stefan Thunberg and Björn Carlström, who also produced the series with Per Janérus.
Based on Emelie Schepp's novel, Jana - Marked for Life will tell the story of the murder of a high-ranking Swedish Migration Agency official.
"The main suspect is also found dead, and Jana immediately recognises something on his scarred body. To understand her own traumatic past, Jana must reach the killer ahead of the police," the synopsis reads.
The cast includes Dystopia star Madeleine Martin, Star Wars and Young Royals actor Pernilla August, The Crown's August Wittgenstein, The Bridge star Thure Lindhart, and Triangle of Sadness' Zlatko Buric.
Sigrid Johnson, Johan Ulveson, Fredrik Hallgren, and Moa Gammel also star in the six-part series from The 100-year-old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared's Felix Herngren. Release dates for both shows are yet to be announced.
Sue Deeks, head of BBC programme acquisition, said: "End of Summer is a complex and absorbing mystery drama in a beautiful setting. Jana – Marked for Life is an intriguing and suspenseful thriller. We are so pleased to be adding these two compelling series to our rich catalogue of Nordic Noir."
