Banana Republic under fire for confusing, 'sexist' ad

Banana Republic is under fire for an online ad that some are calling sexist and others find just plain confusing. Others are calling out the brand for promoting unsafe bicycle safety. The ad shows a man riding a bicycle with a woman leaning back against the handles as she sits on him.

“The slimming Sloan pant for her. The new Rapid Movement Chino for him. Try our perfect-fitting pants for a life in motion,” the ad says.

As some pointed out, the model doesn’t need much “slimming.”

And wait — so men get “movement” and women get “slimming”?

“Nice casual sexism in this promoted tweet, @BananaRepublic. Slimming pants for her, ‘rapid movement’ pants for him? BTW, that’s not a thing,” wrote one user. “Is this an actual ad or satire? The sexism is glaring. Appearance for her? Action for him? I’m not even extremely sensitive,” commented another.

And what, exactly, is a “rapid movement chino”?

Many critics even went as far as to suggest the ad inadvertently promotes unsafe cycling.

“That is an extremely dangerous way to ride a bike on a bumpy dirt road,” wrote one user. “Horrible injuries or even death can follow,” another user commented.

Another user questioned: “Really? Non-disc brakes and ‘safety’ brake levers?”

Another Twitter user wondered who “has ever ridden their bike like this,” and a few Twitter users offered some helpful suggestions:

Kimye did it first in “Bound 2” …

And who could forget the Seth Rogen and James Franco parody?

And then there’s these guys…

Even if some customers didn’t find the ad sexist, they were still baffled by it:

A Banana Republic rep did respond.

We are still scratching our heads.
