Trending on social media, the beauty world has coined the phrase 'banana bun' as a must-have hairstyle.

The terms 'french twist' and 'loose chignon' are getting thrown around quite a bit, but it's basically a glorified, messy low bun on a slant.

As for it's name, the 'banana' part of the bun refers to the angled and slightly curved shape of the knot, as opposed to a traditional round 'bun'.

Alternatively, it could be that the banana refers to the fact that you twist the hair into itself like a chignon or French twist, before you secure it in a low messy bun at the nape of the neck in a vague banana shape.

It all looks and sounds easy, but as with many other 'just woke up like this' sort of styles, they can be a lot more difficult to pull off than you might imagine.

Of course, the good news is we've all been using this hairstyle for years. It's our go-to for days when we we've pressed the snooze button one too many times.

At least now we don't have to get hair guilt when we walk into the office to see co-workers with their perfectly pre-curled locks. Our lazy approach is now equally as stylish and we spent an extra half an hour in bed, so who's the real winner here?
