Are we influenced by high fashion or is high fashion influenced by us? Well, if the latest offering from Balenciaga is anything to go by, it's definitely the latter.
As part of the Spanish brand's Autumn/Winter 2021 collection, it's releasing a high fashion, high-vis hooded workwear jacket. Previously sported pretty exclusively by bin men and construction workers, for the price of £2,890 anyone can now be seen around town living their high-vis best lives.
Balenciaga says the jacket is "oversized", "cocoon shape" and completely "reversible". However, right now it is only available in two sizes, extra small and small, which we know will disappoint all of our readers who fit into a medium up.
Of course, not understanding what designer Demna Gvasalia was trying to achieve with his new design, social media users were quick to poke fun at the costly jacket.
One said: “This is ridiculous. Since when was it fashionable to dress like a bin man?"
“I’ve always thought we were the best dressed council workers — but I never expected to see my work jacket on a catwalk! I’d sell my work gear online if it was worth so much,” added a bin man who was surprised to learn that he was now a fashion icon.
Not content with just mimicking bin men, Balenciaga is also selling an £850 "messenger backpack" inspired by the hefty bags worn by Uber Eats delivery staff.
They're actually taking the piss out of us now.
