Last night's Great British Bake Off final paid a fitting tribute to former contestant Luis Troyano, who died last month from oesophageal cancer.

The news broke at the beginning of November that the 48-year-old baker, who appeared in series 5 of the much-loved TV show, had passed away following a cancer diagnosis. Luis' agent, Anne Kibel, said at the time on Twitter: "Sadly, my lovely client lost his brave fight against Oesophageal cancer last week. A fantastic man with a love of baking that saw him get to the finals of GBBO, write a wonderful book, Bake It Great and do so much more. Always in our thoughts."

GBBO hadn't acknowledged Luis' sad death on the show until now, when they dedicated the final episode to him. At the end of the montage showing what all the contestants have been up to since finishing the show, a photograph of Luis from his time during Bake Off popped up, along with the words: "In memory of Luis Troyano 1971-2020".

Luis reached the final of the 2014 baking series, where he competed against fellow bakers Richard Burr and Nancy Birtwhistle, who won the show. Following his success, he went on to open The Hive Bakery in Poynton, Manchester as well as writing baking books.

The poignant tribute to Luis stirred an emotional reaction from viewers last night, many of whom took to social media to share their feelings upon seeing him honoured like that.

"I am seriously ugly crying... Rest in peace LuisTroyano. I will never forget you. One of my faves," wrote one viewer. "So emotional at the end of this years #gbbo and then the tribute to @luistroyano tipped me over the edge," posted another.

Someone who had previously worked with Luis prior to his success on the Bake Off also took to Twitter to acknowledge his thoughts on the dedication. "Respect to TV bosses who put up a tribute to Luis Troyano at the end of tonight’s #GBBOFinal. We worked at the same ad agency before his baking fame. He never changed his smile, his ability to stay positive and his great creative flair. A sad loss and sadder that he was just 48."

In the wake of his death, Luis' wife, Louise, set up aJustGiving page to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. On the page, she used Luis' own words to allow him to thank all the organisations who played a role in helping him through his illness.

"A massive thank you to all the amazing professionals who really did try their absolute best for me, showed me absolute compassion and gave me more time than what was seemingly possible. I thank you sincerely," he had said prior to his death.

While Louise only intended to raise £1000 for charity, the page has so far accrued an incredible £5,300.
