Baftas 2018: Jennifer Lawrence has responded to claims she was 'rude' to Joanna Lumley

Jennifer Lawrence has publicly addressed criticism that she was "rude" to Bafta host Joanna Lumley when she introduced her.

The Red Sparrow actor referred to her remarks as an "inside joke."

Lumley introduced Lawrence by calling her "the hottest actress on the planet" and referred to her as "ravishing."

After Lumley's introduction, Lawrence thanked the host saying, "Hi, that was a bit much but thank you, Joanna."

Because of Lawrence's response to Lumley, she received criticism from social media users saying she was "stuck up" and rude."

Lawrence spoke out about her remarks on UK station Magic Radio, during a show with Ronan Keating

"I want to clear it up,” Lawrence said. “Okay so backstage Joanna and I were both about to go out… and I was like, ‘Just [say] adjective after adjective, ‘tall’, ‘beautiful’, just say that I’m this and that. And she was like, ‘Alright darling’.”

Lawrence referred to their interaction prior to Lumley's introduction as an "inside joke."

Lawrence added, "She went on and said all these really nice things about me and when I got up to the podium, I was like, ‘That was a bit much’, after I spent all of backstage telling her how to be really nice to me. Then everybody thought that I was being rude."

The 27-year-old actress defended herself using a Mean Girls joke saying, "But to be fair, I couldn’t have just walked out after she [described me as] ‘the biggest movie star in the world’ and gone ‘thank you, Joanna’. That would have been like, ‘So you agree, you think you’re really pretty’.”

Hopefully it's all settled now, but we'll have to wait and see.
