Anne Hathaway and Amy Adams were the toast of the BAFTAs 2013 red carpet tonight, leading the trend for chic black dresses as the A-listers stepped out in a freezing London.

As temperatures plummeted and rain lashed down, the Les Miserables and star of The Muppets let the weather dictate their fashion choices - stepping out in classic black gowns, each with an individual twist.

Anne opted for a Burberry black column gown with metallic stud detailing on the top, teaming her gown with a vintage clutch, black waterfall coat and a flash of raspberry lipstick.

The star seemed to cope better with the weather at tonight's BAFTAs than most, as she was spied lending her coat to fellow actress Andrea Riseborough on the red carpet - who was shaking in the cold.

Meanwhile Amy Adams opted for a feminine, gothic-inspired lace gown by Elie Saab, which featured a daring plunging neckline of sheer material with lace protecting her modesty.

With her strawberry-blonde locks piled in a chic bun atop her head, the star's gown also featured a thigh-high split down the skirting - giving a glimpse at her champagne-coloured satin shoes.

Black was clearly the key trend of the night, with Sarah Jessica Parker, Thandie Newton, Gemma Arterton and Emilia Fox just some of the stars in the hue.

Sex and The City star SJP bucked the trend for a black dress and instead stepped out in a chic jumpsuit by Elie Saab, which featured a velvet top with a keyhole slit at the bust and tailored trousers.

Gemma Arterton dared to bare in her one-shouldered, Grecian-inspired Cecilia Catterone gown which featured nude and black stripes. She teamed her looks with a loose updo and diamond jewels.

Thandie Newton was one of the many stars in black lace, adding a pop of colour with pillarbox-red lipstick, while Emilia Fox showcased an old-Hollywood glamour look in Givenchy.

Elsewhere, presenter Laura Whitmore flashed a cheeky hint of sideboob in her black jumpsuit, with Caroline Flack being just one the few stars who stepped out in sheer long sleeves in a studded Morella Sasson gown.
