Protein shakes: you either love them, or you loathe them. But, whichever side of the fence you sit, there's no denying that the humble whey or vegan protein shake is the muscle-builder's best friend. On a cost-per-serving basis, it's cheap, low-calorie and is quick to consume.
But that doesn't mean you have to chug a tasteless, watery shake down every morning to get the best results. Instead, and as fitness trainer and cover model Alex Crockford proves in our recent TikTok post, you can add other healthy ingredients — including spinach, oats and fruit — to level-up your shake from a murky mix to a sumptuous smoothie.
Not only will this add to the flavour and the texture of the protein shake, but you'll be upping its muscle-building potential, too. There's more: additional carbohydrates from the oats will boost your energy before, during or after a workout and antioxidants found in the blueberries and other fruit will help build a healthy cardiovascular system and protection against neurodegenerative and digestive diseases.
