Engagement rings can be spendy, but Asda has launched a budget-friendly ring to propose with just in time for Valentine's Day.

Priced at just £1, the supermarket has unveiled the super-cheap sparkler for those planning to pop the question on February 14,

The George Home Valentine's Engagement Ring has a simple silver-coloured band, surrounding a diamond-style gem, which mimics a classic engagement ring style.

Packaged in a red velvet box in the shape of a heart, the ring is perfect for a very budget Valentine's Day.

What's more, it's available online, which means you can get it delivered with your other essentials.

Advertising the romantic gift for wannabe proposers, Asda wrote: "Share some love with this ring with matching heart box."

We all know how expensive engagement rings can be, with recent research from Diamonds Factory suggesting the average amount people spend on sparklers in the UK is around £1865.

Meanwhile according to an expert-driven report on Brides.com, the purchaser should traditionally spend about three full months’ salary on the ring. Yikes.

With that in mind, the Asda ring provides a cheaper alternative for those who don’t have a lot of cash to spare.

Alternatively, the jewellery could act as a temporary ring, while you find your partner’s dream ring once you've popped the question.

Commenting on the ring, Catherine Fryer, events vuyer at Asda says: “As the saying goes, it’s impossible to put a price on love but with the average cost of an engagement ring in the thousands, we wanted to offer our customers a more affordable version for 2022.”

Predictably the launch has been met with mixed reactions, with some finding the affordable product cute, while others weren't so sure.

"Just read that @asda launched a £1 engagement ring for Valentine's Day... I find that so hilariously British", one Twitter user wrote.

While another added: "Asda really out here selling an engagement ring and box for a £1, you couldn’t make it up."

Asda isn't the only brand who have dipped their toes in the budget-engagement ring market recently, Poundland also sell a purse-friendly proposal ring for £1.

First released in 2019 in the lead up to Valentine’s Day, the ‘Bling Rings’ offer faux diamonds, topaz and rubies in gold and silver-coloured settings, as well as a silver band for men.

Marketed as ‘placeholder’ rings, the jewellery is designed to act as a stand-in for the proposal so partners can pick a ‘forever’ ring together at a later date.

And the budget retailer doesn't seem best pleased about Asda's own engagement ring launch, writing on Twitter: "Hi @asda. What do they say about imitation and flattery? Nothing says "I [heart emoji] You" like the original £1 #Poundland Bling Ring. Available in our stories nationwide #KnockOffLove."
