"I don't come from the football background, I come from the soccer background," the actor says
Arnold Schwarzenegger discovered a love for football through his kids.
As the actor, 76, spoke with PEOPLE about his 2024 Super Bowl commercial for State Farm, the Austrian-born actor shared he mostly learned about American football when his own children were growing up and playing the game.
"It was all more kind of their deal because I don't come from the football background. I come from the soccer background," he says. "So I would say that the majority of things that I learned about football was through my kids because they would have their friends over and they would be talking about, 'Oh, this is a foul,' And I'd say, 'Why was it a foul?' And they would explain to me the rules."
"So they were very, very smart and really experienced," Schwarzenegger adds, noting that sons Patrick and Christopher played football growing up.
"We had football events at home. They brought their friends over," he adds. "We had the 5,000 pounds of pizza that we'd serve. It was always a big deal."

Schwarzenegger partnered with State Farm for a commercial that will air during Sunday's big game that features him as Agent State Farm in a play on his longtime career as an action movie star.
Despite the high-profile spot, Schwarzenegger is not taking sides as the Kansas City Chiefs and San Fransisco 49ers prepare to face off for the NFL's Vince Lombardi Trophy in Las Vegas.
"It doesn't matter to me," he tells PEOPLE, when asked who he is rooting for Sunday. "I've been really enjoying watching those teams play and I'm really looking forward to that. No matter what it is, if you watch the best you're going to enjoy it."
Schwarzenegger's State Farm ad will air just before the second quarter begins on Sunday as the Chiefs and the 49ers face off in Super Bowl LVIII, airing on CBS at 6:30 p.m. ET.
