Most will know the name Armie Hammer for the actor's star turn in the movie Call Me By Your Name, in which he played the love interest of Timothée Chalamet. Now, however, he's the focus of attention for more, erm, unusual reasons: namely, he's been accused of being a sexual cannibal with some especially niche/dark kinks.

To recap: earlier this week an Instagram account (using the handle @houseofeffie) posted a series of screenshots which she alleges are disturbing DMs between her and Hammer, who she also claims to have been in a relationship with for four years (whilst he was still married to his estranged wife, Elizabeth Chambers).

Said screenshots appear to show Hammer detailing a number of graphic and violent sexual fantasies, as well as recounting a story about [WARNING: GRAPHIC] a time he once cut open a live animal and ate its still warm heart. A couple of examples of these messed up messages include "If I wanted to cut off one of your toes and keep it with me in my pocket, so I always had a piece of you in my possession?" and "I am 100% a cannibal" and "I need your blood, I crave it". I mean... wow. That is a lot.

Following the claims from @HouseOfEffie, other women have also come forward with similar stories and screengrabs (but again nothing has been proved as genuine as yet). It's also reported by the Daily Mail that a friend of Hammer's ex-wife has said she believes the claims and is "shocked and sickened" by them.

Another of his ex-partners, writer Jessica Ciencin Henriquez, also tweeted about the claims. "If you are still questioning whether or not those Armie Hammer DMs are real (and they are) maybe you should start questioning why we live in a culture willing to give abusers the benefit of the doubt instead of victims."

However, adding to the confusion, there are also alleged screenshots doing the rounds in which @HouseOfEffie is supposedly confessing to having made the entire thing up. So to say it's confusing right now is... accurate?

Now, Armie himself has spoken out to address the claims – which he refers to as "bullshit" – when discussing stories that he has since withdrawn from his role as a romantic lead in a film opposite Jennifer Lopez. In a statement, reported by Variety, he said: "I’m not responding to these bulls**t claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic. Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I’m grateful to them for that."
