Calling all rising stars in British fashion. The ELLE UK Generation Next prize, in partnership with Grace de Monaco, is now open for applications, offering an opportunity to accelerate your career and gain support from some of the industry’s experts.

This year, ELLE UK has doubled down on its commitment to championing homegrown talent. Following October’s ELLE Style Awards, which celebrated the brilliance of British-born brands, the launch of the Generation Next Prize aims to support young designers as they navigate this transformative period in fashion.

At its heart, the Generation Next Prize is a call to action for designers whose brands are no older than five years old and specialise in ready-to-wear, accessories, or jewellery. The winner will receive a £10,000 bursary, alongside exclusive mentoring sessions with business expert and entrepreneur Eric Collins and designer and legendary Central Saint Martins lecturer Berni Yates. They’ll also have the opportunity to design an exclusive scarf for luxury brand Grace de Monaco.

The award will be judged by a panel of some of the most influential names in fashion, including fashion designers Simone Rocha and Marco Capaldo of 16Arlington, Yates, Kenya Hunt, editor-in-chief of ELLE UK, Avril Mair, ELLE UK fashion director, Tamison O’Connor, fashion features director of ELLE UK.

Who Can Apply?

The prize is open to emerging designers with businesses no older than five years, specialising in ready-to-wear, accessories, or jewellery.

A 100-word overview of your business model, your consumer and your sales strategy.
A 100 words on how you seek to make a positive contribution to the British fashion landscape.
A 100-word summary of sustainability efforts within your company and supply chain ecosystem.
A 100-word pitch on how this prize would transform your brand’s future.

The winner will be announced ahead of London Fashion Week in February.


Terms and Conditions (the 'Terms')

Please read the following Terms carefully. These explain how to enter the competition, who is eligible, and full details of the prize.

A. How to Enter

  1. Entrants must submit the following to generationnextprize@elleuk.com to enter the competition:

  • A portfolio of work, which includes the story of your brand;

  • Up to 100 words on your business model, your consumer and how you sell to customers; to 100 words on how you seek to make a positive contribution to the landscape of British Fashion;

  • Up to 100 words on sustainability efforts within your business, including supply chain ecosystem; and

  • Up to 100 words explaining how the award would benefit your business and how you would use the money.

2. Entries in the incorrect format will not be considered.

B. Entrant Criteria

  1. This competition is open to UK residents only aged 18 or over.

  2. Entrants must be the founder or co-founders, majority owner(s) and designer(s) of a UK-based business that:

a. is based and primarily operated in the UK
b. is no older than 5 years;
c. designs, creates, and sells ready-to-wear, accessories or jewellery.

  1. This competition is not open to any employees (or their immediate families) of Hearst, or any other businesses or individuals associated with the creation and administration of this competition

  2. Entrants who do not meet the criteria will not be considered, and if we learn after making an offer that the criteria were not met, then the offer may be withdrawn.

C. Competition Deadlines

  1. The competition opens on 9 December 2024 and closes at 23:59 GMT on 9 January 2025. The winners will be selected and announced ahead of the London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2025 Season.

D. Supporting Entry Documents

  1. Entrants must provide, upon request, sufficient evidence: that they are the founder or co-founders, majority owner(s) and designer(s) of the business; that they and their business meet the criteria listed in paragraph B.2 above; that any content submitted in their portfolio and/or other entry submissions are their own original creation.

  2. All documents submitted must be in the English language.

  3. Entry is by email only. Postal or other form of entry will not be accepted.

E. Selection Criteria

  1. The Shortlist and ultimately the Winner of the competition will be selected at the judging panel’s sole discretion, using a number of criteria including (but not limited to):

a. Quality of entry submissions, as outlined in A (above)

b. Adherence to the entry criteria, as outlined in B (above)

c. Proof of identity and residence/passports held.

F. Selection of Winners and Prize

  1. Hearst’s judging panel will select a shortlist of entrants (the 'Shortlist' and 'Shortlisted Entrant(s)”). Each Shortlisted Entrant will be required to present their entry to the judging panel virtually at a date and time to be notified by Hearst. The Shortlisted Entrants will be contacted by email using the contact details provided on entry. Each Shortlisted Entrant shall have 48 hours (starting from the time the email is sent) to confirm availability for the presentation and accept their position on the Shortlist.

  2. If the Shortlisted Entrants do not accept their position on the Shortlist within this deadline or cannot or do not attend their presentation or comply with these Terms, Hearst reserves the right (but is not obliged) to withdraw the offer and offer the Shortlist position to another entrant, selected by the same judges.

  3. Following the Shortlist presentations, Hearst’s judging panel will select one (1) winner (the 'Winner').

  4. Selection of both the Shortlist and the Winner is entirely at the judges’ sole discretion. Their decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into over this decision.

  5. The Winner will be contacted by email using the contact details provided on entry. The Winner shall have 48 hours (starting from the time the email is sent) to accept the prize. If the Winner accepts the prize within 48 hours of the email being sent, they will be entitled to the prize, which consists of consists of £10,000 in cash, one-on-one business mentoring sessions with Eric Collins and Berni Yates, and the opportunity to design a scarf for Grace de Monaco.

  6. If the Winner does not accept the prize within this deadline or cannot or does not comply with these Terms, Hearst reserves the right to withdraw the offer and offer the prize to a runner-up, selected by the same judges.

G. The Prize

  1. £10,000 cash: this is a cash prize for the benefit of your business, which will be payable to your business account in two installments of £5,000. The first installment will be payable following the Winner announcement. The second installment will be payable upon completion of both the mentoring sessions and the scarf design submission.

  2. One-on-one business mentoring sessions with Eric Collins and Berni Yates: four sessions in total; two with each mentor. Eric Collins and Berni Yates will be available to the Winner, at mutually convenient times, to discuss and help the Winner with their business plan. The sessions could be either virtual or in person, as appropriate based on what is mutually convenient. Neither the Winner nor the mentors are under any obligation to continue the mentoring relationship after the four sessions have been completed.

  3. Opportunity to design a scarf for Grace de Monaco. The Winner will submit a scarf design for Grace de Monaco. Grace de Monaco is not obliged to print or use the scarf design.

H. What Involvement is Required of the Winner?

  1. The Winner must be willing to prepare and submit an original scarf design for Grace de Monaco, based on a brief and delivered on or before a date to be notified by Hearst.

  2. The Winner must be willing to be featured editorially across ELLE UK platforms, which may include a depiction of their face, voice, and likeness, and must be available for any associated shoots and/or interviews at dates and times to be specified by Hearst. There is no obligation on Hearst to feature the Winner.

  3. The Winner may be required to be present in person for some or all of the attendances listed above. The location will be in London and travel expenses will not be covered by Hearst.

  4. The exact dates for the above commitments will be confirmed by Hearst to the Winner.

  5. If a Winner is unable to comply with this Section H, Hearst reserves the right to withdraw the prize and offer the prize to a runner-up selected by the same judges.

I. Rights Ownership

  1. All entrants warrant and represent that their entry materials are their own work and do not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party. Entrants indemnify Hearst and its assigns, licensees and successors in title (to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law) against all liability, actions, claims, demands, losses or damages (including reasonable legal fees) caused by or arising out of the breach or alleged breach of this Section I.1.

  2. The Winner warrants and represents that their scarf design is their own work and does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party. The Winner indemnifies Hearst and Grace de Monaco and their assigns, licensees and successors in title (to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law) against all liability, actions, claims, demands, losses or damages (including reasonable legal fees) caused by or arising out of the breach or alleged breach of this Section I.2.

  3. By entering the competition, Entrants agree to grant to Hearst an exclusive, royalty-free, transferable, irrevocable, sublicensable, worldwide licence to use and benefit from all copyright and all other intellectual property rights and title (including goodwill) in their entry materials including all rights and remedies in respect of any infringement of such rights and all rights relating to the exploitation, printing and distribution of the entry materials for the full term (including any renewal or extension) of such rights (“Intellectual Property Rights”), including the right to disseminate, amend, modify and exploit these Intellectual Property Rights. All Entrants agree not to assert any moral rights in respect of their entry and the publicity materials (wherever and whenever those rights are recognised) against Hearst, its assigns, licensees and successors in title.

  4. As between Grace de Monaco and the Winner, Grace de Monaco will own, and the Winner hereby assigns to Grace de Monaco, any and all copyright and other Intellectual Property Rights in the scarf and scarf design(s) that are developed through this competition. The Winner agrees not to assert any moral rights in respect of their scarf design (whereever and whenever those rights are recognised) against Hearst or Grace de Monaco, their assigns, licensees and successors in title. No rights of any kind in or to the Intellectual Property Rights in or to the scarf are reserved to or by the Winner.

  5. The Winner shall cooperate with Hearst and Grace de Monaco, and will execute such documents as Hearst or Grace de Monaco may reasonably require to achieve the objectives of this Section I. If the Winner fails to do so, Hearst reserves the right to withdraw the prize and offer the prize to a runner-up selected by the same judges

J. General Provisions

  1. Upon submitting an entry to this competition entrants will be deemed to have accepted these Terms, and agreed to be bound by them in total.

  2. Hearst's decision is final in every situation, including but not limited to all Clauses detailed above and no correspondence will be entered into in respect of the validity of any such decision.

  3. Hearst shall be permitted to exclude or disqualify any entrant at any time at its sole discretion.

  4. Hearst reserves the right to exclude late entries, incomplete entries, entries that do not meet the criteria, and entries made by third parties or agents.

  5. Hearst does not accept any responsibility for late or lost entries. Proof of sending an entry, or in the case of a Shortlisted Entrant or the Winner, confirmation of acceptance, is not proof of receipt of that entry or acceptance by Hearst.

  6. The name of the Winner will be available by sending a stamped addressed envelope to Hearst Magazines UK, 30 Panton Street, London SQ1Y 4AJ, United Kingdom, indicating the name of the competition.

  7. The Shortlisted Entrants and the Winner agree, by virtue of their acceptance of these Terms, to the use by Hearst of their name and photograph and will co-operate with any other reasonable requests by Hearst relating to any post-competition publicity.

  8. Once entered, entries cannot be returned/withdrawn/amended.

  9. The Promoter of this competition is Hearst UK, the trading name of the National Magazine Company Limited (“Hearst”, “us”, “our”, “we”).

  10. Prizes are provided “as is” and without warranty, must be taken as stated and cannot be deferred. Hearst reserves the right to change the prize in the event of unforeseen circumstances. There will be no cash alternative.

  11. Hearst reserves the right to (i) cancel and/or withdraw this competition at any time and without notice; and/or (ii) amend these Terms by providing an updated copy of the Terms for review and acceptance by each entrant.

  12. Your personal data will be processed by Hearst in order to fulfil this competition. Hearst’s Privacy Notice is at http://www.hearst.co.uk/privacy-notice .

  13. These Terms are governed by English law, and all entrants agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts in relation to all matters arising under or in connection with these Terms.

K. Our Liability to You

  1. Nothing in these Terms shall exclude or limit Hearst’s liability to you for (a) fraudulent misrepresentation, fraud, wilful misconduct or gross negligence, or (b) death or personal injury resulting from Hearst’s negligence or the negligence of Hearst’s employees or agents.

  2. Nothing in these Terms is intended to affect the legal rights to which you may be entitled.

  3. Subject to the above, Hearst is not responsible for:

a. losses not caused by our breach of these Terms;
b. indirect losses which are a side effect of the main loss or damage and which are not reasonably foreseeable by you and us at the time of you accepting these Terms;
c. losses caused by lost, late, incomplete, stolen, misdirected or undeliverable submissions, to the extent not within our control;
d. business losses, and/or losses to non-consumers; and
e. failure to meet any of our obligations under these Terms where such failure is due to events beyond our control. “Events beyond our control” means any cause beyond Hearst’s reasonable control which prevents us from providing the services or fulfilling any of our other obligations under these Terms and includes but is not limited to fire, flood, storm, riot, civil disturbance, war, nuclear accident, terrorist activity and acts of God.

4. Subject to the above, to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Hearst’s liability to you shall not exceed the total monetary value of the cash prize owed to you.

L. Your Liability to Us

  1. If you do not comply with any of your obligations under these Terms, you shall be responsible for any direct losses, reasonable out-of-pocket expenses and other reasonable costs incurred by Hearst which are a direct result of such a breach of your obligations.
