There's nothing quite as delicious as fresh bread, is there? Except for maybe cheese or a really cold G&T, but we digress...

Anyway, it's safe to say that we've enjoyed our fair share of carbs over the years, so imagine how shocked we were to hear that we've been slicing our loaves wrong this entire time.

And it might be the reason why your slices are never even – which, as we all know, is not only deeply frustrating, but can lead to wastage when you end up cutting a measly slither that's basically inedible.

If this happens to you more often than you'd like, then listen up because a food expert has shared the ultimate bread slicing trick – and it will change everything.

Been slicing your bread from the top down all this time? Then you need to stop right now, as The Sun reports. That's according to restaurant worker Sarah Jampel, who told cooking website Food52 that the correct way to cut a loaf of bread is on its side...

This, she claims, not only makes it easier to cut even slices but also better preserves the shape of the loaf, which can become squashed if you cut from the top downwards and start crumbling.

For this reason, professional sandwich makers and restaurant workers favour the on-the-side slicing technique, apparently.

'The best way to get consistent slices and preserve the shape of the loaf, which has a tendency to crumble, is to turn the bread on its side, score it using a ruler, and then slice away- clean motions, just a few back-and-forth saws, and as little downward pressure as possible,' she said.

Of course, cutting bread on its side is a little tricker so watch those fingers! But we reckon it might be worth it to create the perfect sarnie...
