Anti-ageing stem cell treatments are ‘showing promise in human trials’
Stem cell treatments which can reverse some of the symptoms of ageing – in particular, the frailty of very old people – are showing promise in human trials at the University of Miami.
It’s one of several breakthroughs in anti-ageing research in recent years, with other experiments able to restore fitness to ageing mice.
The University of New South Wales researchers said the mouse breakthrough could lead to an effective anti-ageing pill being on the market within three years.
Clinical trials of mesenchymal stem cell therapy to treat frailty in older adults by the University of Miami Miller School of medicine have shown promise.

The researchers found that older adults treated with mesenchymal stem cell therapy showed ‘significant and meaningful’ improvements in walking ability.
The researchers write, ‘These trials represent potential landmarks in the treatment of frailty.
Both studies are early-phase trials of a small number of participants, designed primarily to assess safety, so conclusions about efficacy need to be treated with caution. Even so, the results are striking and, at minimum, pave the way for large randomized Phase III clinical trials.’
Professor Joshua M Hare said, ‘I was very surprised and excited with the results. The idea that we can biologically modify frailty is very exciting.’
