2018 was pretty rough for Ant and Dec. After Ant McPartlin crashed into two other cars at more than two times the legal alcohol limit in March 2018, he was banned from driving, fined £86,000, and sent to rehab. His TV commitments with best friend and presenting partner Declan Donnelly were suspended, and Dec was forced to go it alone for the first time ever in his TV career.
Something which, in a new interview on The One Show, the pair admitted was almost a permanent choice. Speaking on the show yesterday [2 September], Dec, said: "Oh, absolutely [there was a moment where we thought we might have to go solo].
"We both were very unsure what tomorrow would bring. I didn’t know if Ant was going to come back from his period away and go, 'do you know what, I want to go and be a pig farmer in Wales'."
Ant added, "We both did. When you do come back together, and we have in the last year, you enjoy it more. I don’t think we ever took it for granted, but there are points where you just go to work. That enforced break made us think about the importance of things. We realised we just love being together.
"When you take time out you have a chance to look at your life, look at what’s making you happy, look at what you can change and I was going through quite a lot at the time.
Could you imagine Ant without Dec? It's like cookies without chocolate - it just doesn't work!
This isn't the first time the pair have opened up about the impact Ant's actions had on their friendship. In March 2019, Dec told Guardian Weekend magazine, he'd "be lying if I said the thought [to go permanently solo] hadn’t crossed my mind".
Describing Ant's actions as "indefensible", Dec continued: "Of course I thought about it. Ant went away, and he had a lot of work to do on himself. He had a lot of thinking to do. Equally, I did.
"[But] we got our relationship back on track and we carried on. That’s the thing that makes me the happiest, working together," he continued, before an emotional Ant added, "Don’t start, 'cause I’ve cried too many tears in the last year."
The friends reunited professionally in January 2019, when they filmed the auditions for the 2019 series of Britain's Got Talent. They are currently gearing up for I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! which will be filmed in Wales.
