It has been announced today that the Limassol Marathon, which was due to take place on Sunday 22 March, has been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak. In a statement on the race website, organisers shared that ‘ as part of its containment strategy’ the Cyprus Government has postponed any event with more than 75 people.
The marathon will now take place on Sunday 22 November 2020.
The statement reads, “In face of the recent developments with the novel COVID-19 virus, and as part of its containment strategy, the Cyprus government has decided that among others all public gatherings of more than 75 people will be banned.
“Due to these circumstances, the organising team of the OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO announces the postponement of the event which was to take place on Saturday and Sunday, the 21st and 22nd of March 2020.

“As promised to our runners, friends, sponsors and associates, the organising team of the OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO has an operational plan to reschedule the event. The new dates for the 14th OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO are the 21st and 22nd of November 2020.
“We will be in contact with all affected parties (runners, visitors, sponsors and associates) to support all of their enquiries.
“Despite the disruption, and our consequent disappointment, this decision has been made by the government of Cyprus and it is our obligation to abide by it.”
This is the latest in a number of running events cancelled in an attempt to control the spread of the coronavirus. Last week, the Rome Marathon was cancelled and the Paris Marathon was postponed. Brighton Marathon have offered runners left disappointed from either marathon a spot in their 2020 race. This week, the Barcelona Marathon has been postponed.
At present, London Marathon organisers have said they are monitoring the situation in the UK.
