A24’s new movie announcement has the gays amped up over one little word.

Anne Hathaway is taking on the role of a fictional pop diva in an upcoming melodrama Mother Mary from Green Knight director David Lowery, according to Deadline. The publication’s exclusive release of the news states that the film will follow her character “and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer,” played by Michaela Coel.

Every LGBTQ+ fan has been burned enough times by movies and TV shows that sound like they’re going to be gay but turn out to be something else, and we all know the word “relationship” doesn’t always refer to romance.

But folks are holding out hope the ambiguity happening in this description will ultimately shake out in the favor of sapphics everywhere.

If these chaotically enthusiastic tweets didn’t make it clear enough, the movie will also feature songs written by Jack Antonoff — who has produced music for Taylor Swift, Troye Sivan, St. Vincent, Lana Del Ray, and Carly Rae Jepsen — and Charli XCX. And yes, that does all add to the gay of it all, no matter how the plot synopsis actually unravels.

Coel recently appeared in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as Aneka, a queer character with a kiss scene that was ultimately axed before filming, while Hathaway’s Eileen, a sort-of queer movie based on a sort-of queer book, has been making the film festival rounds.

Hopefully, Mother Mary simply does what the world is clamoring for, and lets "relationship" here do all the gay heavy lifting we deserve after all.
