Anne Hathaway has revealed she fought to the very end to land the lead in The Devil Wears Prada, after being ninth in line for the role of Andy Sachs in the cult 2006 fashion movie.

The Oscar-winning star - who played plucky assistant Andy to Meryl Streep's frightening fashion magazine editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly - made the admission during an appearance Friday on RuPaul's Drag Race as she encouraged the contestants to 'never give up.'

When Drag Race star Rosé asked the actress if there were any roles she had to 'fight tooth and nail for', Hathaway jokingly responded: 'How much time do you have?'

'I will give you some tea: I was the ninth choice for Devil Wears Prada,' she continued. 'But I got it! Hang in there, never give up.'

Rachel McAdams was first choice off the back of the success of The Notebook and Mean Girls, but she reportedly turned it down.

Speaking to Elle US back in 2007 about her decision to decline the part, McAdams explained: 'I'm not going to make movies just to make movies. I have to be passionate about it. And at the same time, I can get very distracted when I'm working, and I like to get back to my life a lot.'

It's reported that Homeland star Clare Danes and singer and actress Juliette Lewis also auditioned for the role.

'I had to be patient,' Hathaway previously told Variety about securing the part. 'I wasn't the first choice.'

She added that she traced the words 'hire me' in the sand of a zen garden plant belonging to an executive following their meeting to catch their attention.

The Devil Wears Prada, based on the novel by former magazine assistant Lauren Weisberger, also starred Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.
