The actual Queen delighted fans yesterday by taking up her rightful place on the FROW at London Fashion Week.

Seated next to Vogue editor Anna Wintour, the Queen, herself a lifelong fashion icon, looked quite at home in the front row at the Richard Quinn show.

Dressed in a pale blue Angela Kelly tweed dress and matching jacket, black gloves, and a matching black purse, the 91-year-old monarch proved she was a fashion pack natural – despite this being her first appearance at the coveted event.

But royal fans weren’t happy that her FROW neighbour didn’t take off her sunglasses, claiming it showed a complete lack of respect for her majesty.

Wintour famously always wears her sunglasses to catwalk shows and, despite sitting next to the Queen, yesterday proved to be no exception.

And social media was far from happy about it the veteran editor’s dark shades.

“Colour me Welsh mam, but I personally feel that if you’re sitting next to any woman of 91, you should remove your sunglasses. *shifts bosom*” beauty journalist Sali Hughes wrote.

That was a sentiment echoed by etiquette expert William Hanson.

“It’s a shame that the queen of fashion Anna Wintour didn’t remove her sunglasses when in the presence of The Queen,” he wrote.

“Is it just me, or wouldn’t it be common courtesy to remove sunglasses when talking to HM The Queen (or indeed anyone?)” wrote another.

“It was very rude for Anna Wintour not to take off her sunglasses. Respect the Queen. Plus not needed inside. Pretentious woman,” another tweeter commented.

Others didn’t see the problem with the Anna Wintour keeping her sunglasses in place.

“Love that Anna Wintour is sat front row with THE QUEEN but still frontin with her sunglasses on #boujiee I need that level of swag in my life uno,” one user wrote.

“Anna is the only person in the world who could casually keep her sunglasses on while talking to the Queen,” another user wrote

But did Anna Wintour break royal protocol by not removing her sunglasses?

Although it is unclear whether there is an official rule about wearing sunglasses in the presence of royalty, according to The Royal Butler, ladies should always remove sunglasses when indoors.

As further proof that indoor sunglasses are a no no, a poll on the website revealed that 76% of people thought it was rude for someone to wear glasses inside.

“This proved to me that the majority agreed that removing sunglasses when talking to another is still an important sign of respect and vital for eye to eye contact during a conversation,” the Royal Butler writes.

Whether or not it was a breach of the royal fashion rules, etiquette expert William Hanson also described Anna Wintour’s sartorial statement as impolite. “Whilst Anna Wintour’s fashion choices usually are faultless her etiquette today is far from on trend,” he told The Daily Mail.

That’s something Debretts agrees with. Back in 2008 the etiquette guide issued an injunction against ever wearing sunglasses indoors, describing the practice as the height of rudeness. “It’s physically shutting off the windows to your soul,” says author Mark Maso said in an interview with Spectator.

In Anna Wintour’s defence, she does have a particularly reason for donning her sunnies inside.

“They are seriously useful. I can sit in a show and if I am bored out of mind, nobody will notice… At this point, they have become, really, armour,” Anna previously revealed in an interview with The Cut.

And to be fair, the presence of the sunnies didn’t seem to bother the monarch as the pair were seen laughing and chatting throughout the show, before the Queen was honoured for her influence on fashion. And rightly so.

She may not wear her sunglasses indoors, but no one rocks a tweed twinset better than her maj!
