The series - think Gossip Girl meets Gone Girl - will explore how a real-life Russian con artist duped the New York City socialite scene through lies, manipulation and Instagram.
And now we know Shonda Rhimes, the power-house responsible for Scandal and Grey's Anatomy, will be directing an all-star cast for a 10-part series about one of the most notorious grifters of all time, well the anticipation is growing by the hour.
From the plot and cast to its release date, here's everything you need to know about Inventing Anna:
Who is Anna Delvey?
In 2013, Russian-born 28-year-old Anna Sorokin moved to New York and created the persona of Anna Delvey- a billionaire German heiress who had a $60 million (£46 million) trust fund. New York Magazine reports that in reality, her father is a former trucker, who runs a heating-and-cooling business.
With her Gossip Girl-inspired image, Sorokin went on to hoax the upper echelons of New York's society into paying for her lavish lifestyle including hotel bills from Manhattan to Marrakech. According to court documents, she presented forged bank statements and would deposit bad cheques, then withdraw the money before they bounced.
At the trial's opening, defence lawyer Todd Spodek said of the con artist: 'Anna had to fake it until she could make it.'
Spodek described her as being 'easily seduced by glamour and glitz' when she saw how the illusion of wealth could bring unimaginable opportunities.
In 2019, a judge sentenced her to 4-12 years in prison for defrauding hotels, restaurants, a private jet company and banks out of more than $200,000 (£156,000).
'As proven at trial, Anna Sorokin committed real white-collar felonies over the course of her lengthy masquerade,' District Attorney Cyrus Vance said in a statement announcing the conviction.
Sorokin is currently serving time at Albion Correctional Facility in Albion, New York.
What is the 'Inventing Anna' plot?
The piece was first published in May 2018 and told the story of a young woman called Anna Delvey and the huge web of lies she told in order to enter a world of the most elite in New York City.
The series will focus in on Delvey’s relationship with journalist Pressler, who attempts to get the truth out of Delvey and follows her as she is placed on trial for her crimes.
Inventing Anna is actually the second piece of Pressler’s work to be picked up and put on the screen. Her first was an article called The Hustlers At Scores which led to this year's box office hit Hustlers staring Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez.
The Netflix's description of the series reads:
In Inventing Anna, a journalist with a lot to prove investigates the case of Anna Delvey, the Instagram-legendary German heiress who stole the hearts of New York’s social scene — and stole their money as well.
But is Anna New York’s biggest con woman or is she simply the new portrait of the American dream? Anna and the reporter form a dark funny love-hate bond as Anna awaits trial and our reporter fights the clock to answer the biggest question in NYC: Who is Anna Delvey?
Who will star in 'Inventing Anna'?
Ozark and Modern Love actress Julia Garner has been cast as Sorokin. The 25-year-old actor won an Emmy this year for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Ozark so it's guaranteed she'll bring a lot to the role.
Meanwhile, Veep alumni and more famously Ada from My Girl Anna Chlumsky will play the character of Vivian (aka Pressler) who works on the story.
Orange Is the New Black's Laverne Cox is set to play the role of Kacy Duke. Variety reports that the character is 'a celebrity trainer and life coach.
'Kacy gets sucked into the Anna whirlwind but is mature and centred enough to stay out of any real trouble. When she least expects it, in the wake of Anna’s crimes, Kacy finds herself becoming a coach to more than just Anna.'
The Bold Type’s Alexis Floyd will star as Neff, who we believe will be based on Neffatari Davis, who worked at Soho Hotel and became friends with Delvey.
And Scandal star Katie Lowes will play Rachel - likely based on real-life friend Rachel Williams, who was conned by Delvey out of thousands of dollars during a trip to Morocco and has since published a book titled My Friend Anna: The True Story of a Fake Heiress.
Who is producing 'Inventing Anna'?
Shonda Rhimes is the heavyweight producer behind the new series, which marks the first new show created by her company, Shondaland, since Scandal. Better yet, Rhimes will also be behind the series' script, while television producer Betsy Beers, has joined as the show's executive producer, the Hollywood Reporter reports.
When is the release date for 'Inventing Anna'?
Although the premiere date is yet to be released, we know the full 10-part series will be coming at some point in 2020.
Naturally, we can't wait.
