The BBC's eagerly awaited adaptation of Agatha Christie's Towards Zero premieres tonight (March 2). Set in the 1930s, the story revolves around tennis star Nevile Strange, who invites his current wife and former spouse to spend the summer at his childhood home, Gull's Point.

At the heart of the story is the formidable Lady Tressilian, a bedridden yet strong-willed matriarch who disapproves of this unconventional setup. In this adaptation, Anjelica Huston steps into the shoes of Lady Tressilian, the latest in a long line of character roles the actor has tackled.

Anjelica comes from a family brimming with talent. Her father was John Huston, an actor, director, and screenwriter who bagged two Oscars and whose filmography boasts classics such as the 1952 version of Moulin Rouge, The Red Badge of Courage, and The African Queen. Her mother, Enrica Soma, was a model and prima ballerina.

Raised in rural County Galway, Ireland, Anjelica has four siblings. Two of her brothers are involved in Hollywood as actors and directors, while her half-sister Allegra Huston is a renowned author and editor.

She has also had relationships with fellow stars. She was involved in a widely publicised on-and-off romance with actor Jack Nicholson for 17 years.

She also dated actor James Fox, photographer David Bailey, and Albert II, Prince of Monaco, whose mother was Grace Kelly. Anjelica was married to sculptor Robert Graham until his death in 2008.

Anjelica Huston's career

Anjelica secured her big break in 1969 with A Walk with Love and Death, a film directed by her father. However, the movie didn't fare well with critics, leading Anjelica to spend a few years modelling, collaborating with designers such as the legendary Halston.

In the mid-70s, she relocated to California and over time starred in several films including her father's final movie, The Dead. Her breakout role arrived in 1989 when she featured in Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors, earning a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

In 1990, she played one of her most recognised roles as the Grand High Witch in the film adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Witches. The film received critical acclaim and became a cult classic. That same year, she also starred in The Grifters, which led to an Oscar nomination.

However, it was her portrayal of Morticia Addams in the 1991 film The Addams Family that catapulted her to fame. Two years later, she reprised her role in the successful sequel, Addams Family Values, earning nominations at the Golden Globes for Best Actress Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for both films.

She also starred as the wicked stepmother in the Cinderella-inspired film Ever After and began venturing into behind-the-scenes work. In 1999, she directed, starred in, and produced Agnes Browne, an Irish romantic comedy based on Brendan O'Carroll's book The Mammy. Brendan later created the sitcom Mrs Brown's Boys.

Children of the 00s might recognise Anjelica from her role as Miss Battle-Axe in Horrid Henry: The Movie, while fans of musical dramas may remember the short-lived show Smash, where she played a Broadway Producer.

Towards Zero will be broadcast on BBC One Wales at 9pm on March 2, or you can catch up on iPlayer.
