Andrew Neil has said he’ll never be on GB News again and that he “couldn’t be happier”.

The journalist, 72, quit as chairman of the channel earlier this month, later saying that he had been in a “minority of one” about the direction it was heading in.

He has now posted a message on Twitter accusing the channel of leaking a “load of smears/lies” and revealing he was pleased to have cut ties with them.

His comments came after a Mail on Sunday article suggested Neil was to be fired, before he confirmed his exit.

He tweeted: “After weeks of talks with @GBNEWS, resulting in exit settlement, the channel then broke it by briefing Mail on Sunday with load of smears/lies then unilaterally cancelling exit deal.

“Leaving me free to do, say whatever I want + never again be on GB News.”

“Couldn’t be happier,” he added.

Neil took a break from GB News just two weeks after it launched in June, and former Sky journalist Colin Brazier took over from him while he was away.

His exit was then confirmed earlier this month.

Speaking on Question Time last week, he said: “I had always made it clear that it wouldn’t be a British Fox News and I think you could do something different without going anywhere near Fox.”

Neil claimed the US channel "deals in untruths, it deals in conspiracy theories, and it deals in fake news".

“That’s not my kind of journalism and I would never have set out to do that,” he said.
