Ana de Armas emulates Marilyn Monroe at Oscars

Ana de Armas is continuing to pay tribute to Marilyn Monroe far beyond her performance in Blonde; the actress' 2023 Oscars red-carpet look was a subtle nod to the Hollywood icon.

De Armas walked the red carpet in a custom-made silk organza Louis Vuitton gown, covered in glittering glass and rhinestone embellishments. Whether intentional or not, it immediately drew comparisons to one of Monroe's most famous dresses – the Jean-Louis design that she wore to sing "Happy Birthday, Mr President" – thanks to its scooped neckline, fitted silhouette and shimmering finish. Down until the knees, that is; while Monroe's tapered into a column-style skirt, de Armas' version culminated in a mermaid-like 3D scalloped train.

De Armas – who was nominated in the Leading Actress category for her role as Monroe in the biopic Blonde at this year's Oscars – wore her hair sleek and straight, while her make-up was fresh and peachy. She finished her statement-making red-carpet look with white gold and diamond jewellery, also by Louis Vuitton.

Of course, Monroe's actual Jean-Louis dress from 1962 was worn to last year's Met Gala by Kim Kardashian. The historical artefact was loaned to the star by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum for the evening.

While de Armas was nominated for her performance in Blonde at the 95th annual Academy Awards, it was Michelle Yeoh that took home the Leading Actress accolade for her turn in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

De Armas underwent an impressive transformation for Andrew Dominik's Blonde – a twisted horror rather than a traditional biopic – which was based on Joyce Carol Oates' 2000 Pulitzer Prize-shortlisted novel about the life of Monroe.
