Ana de Armas is nominated for her first ever best actress Oscar for Blonde

Has there ever been a film as hotly anticipated as Blonde?

Thanks to Cuban actress Ana de Armas’ harrowing portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in the Netflix biopic, hers has become the name on everyone's lips. Now the 33-year-old has been nominated for a 95th Academy Award in the category of 'Best Actress in a Leading Role', and can potentially add an Oscar to her already impressive CV. Following her stellar turn as Bond girl Paloma in No Time To Die, and starring roles in films such as Deep Water and War Dogs - which more than showed off her acting chops - Ana is now steadily gaining recognition as one of Hollywood's biggest names.

Ana de Armas is one of Hollywood's brightest stars

Following the release of the film's trailer in 2022 everyone was buzzing about the uncanny resemblance between Ana and the silver screen legend that was Norma Jean. However, many critics were against the casting choice, due to Ana’s native Spanish accent, which some felt was inappropriate to depict the American 1950s icon.

The film premiered on 16 September following months of scrutiny over its casting and rumours of mid-filming disappointments. The lead actress opened up about her experience filming the difficult role. Speaking with Today Show's Willie Geist, she looked back on transforming herself into Marilyn, and how emotional it made her, "I was her for nine weeks. And I can tell you, it was exhausting. I just cannot imagine what it was like to be her for 36 years."
