A new documentary about the life of Amy Winehouse will be released to mark the ten-year anniversary of her untimely death. Legendary singer Amy tragically passed away on the 23rd of July 2011 in Camden, with the official cause of death recorded as alcohol poisoning.

Although there have been other films made about the musician in the past, most notably the 2015 offering Amy, this new BBC documentary is spearheaded by Amy's mum Janis, who says she is keen for viewers to finally get to know the "real Amy".

Amy Winehouse: 10 Years On promises to share more about the childhood and private life of Amy and will feature unseen archive footage, it will also be a part of a full season of special shows on BBC Two and radio, examining her influence on the music world.

"I don't feel the world knew the true Amy, the one that I brought up, and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to offer an understanding of her roots and a deeper insight into the real Amy," Janis said of the new project, which will be largely female-driven.

Heartbreakingly, Janis also told the BBC that one of her motivations for making this new tribute to Amy is that she suffers with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), which can cause memory loss.

Writing in her 2014 book Loving Amy: A Mother's Story, Janis spoke candidly about a gradual "loss of sharpness" when it comes to her memory, and her fears that one day she may no longer be able to remember her daughter. "I worry about the day when Amy stops being alive in my head and in my heart," she said. "I don't want that day ever to come."

Also speaking about the upcoming documentary, Commissioning Editors Max Gogarty and Rachel Davies, said it will be an opportunity to celebrate the artist's brilliance too – something which often became overshadowed by tabloid stories about her personal life.

"Amy Winehouse: 10 Years On promises to be a celebratory and intimate portrayal of one of the brightest musical talents the UK has ever seen," they said in a BBC statement. "Whilst being a celebration of her musical genius and featuring rare and unheard performances, it will also offer a reinterpretation of the prevailing narrative around her rise and fall, told by those closest to her."

As yet, there is no set release date for Amy Winehouse: 10 Years On.
