After listening to an episode of model Vogue Williams' podcast My Therapist Ghosted Me, which involved a lot of talk about ankle weights, I decided to see what exactly they were and what they would bring to my practically non-existent fitness routine.
After much research, I came to the conclusion that they are a simple yet effective way to take your exercise regime to the next level.
Now, I don't enjoy pumping iron, quite the opposite, but throughout lockdown, I have been trying to stick to a 30-minute or hour-long walk a day.
However, almost 18 months on, and it's becoming tedious. It's the same route day in day out, I've upped the pace, I've tried to do it in reverse, but again, I've exhausted every option.
I've been looking for something that will test my strength and stamina, help tone my muscles, but something I can still enjoy, that doesn't feel like an intense HIIT class that leaves you bed bound for days after. I think Ankle Weights could be the solution.
One pair of ankle weights I've been eyeballing are the Sportneer Adjustable Ankle Weights Set from Amazon.
Why we rate it
The Sportneer Adjustable Ankle Weights Set is suitable for every age and ability.
There are two ankle weight straps with every purchase, both have added weights in discreet pockets, which can be removed.
Each ankle weight strap weighs 2lbs or just under 1kg, and can be worn on its own without additional weights.
However, for those who would like to improve their fitness there are five individual bags of weight to be added to the strap, each weighing 0.6lbs, or 0.27kg.
These weights can be adjusted from 0.23kg to just under 1kg each, so you could work up to 5kg as you progress, which is ideal for beginners.

The ankle strap is also adjustable, thanks to the velcro fastening. Plus, the material is robust, but also comfortable, as the straps are made from a neoprene exterior, with reinforced stitching, and cushioning so as not to rub the wearer.
The ankle weights also vary in colours, including plain black, or black and purple, as well as weights, as shoppers can select from 1.8kg, 3.2kg or 5.8kg - prices vary on selection.
The ankle weights can be worn for any activity: Walking and running, during core training workouts, at the gym, dance classes, during aerobics - the lot.
Plus you can wear them around your wrists, as well as your ankles, if you're looking to tone your arms too.
Prices vary depending on the colour and weight you choose, so costs vary from £16.99 to £29.99, which we think is a steal considering some free weights can retail from £50 upwards.
What the reviews say
The Sportneer Adjustable Ankle Weights Set are recognised as one of Amazon's bestselling fitness buys. Not only that but they have garnered over 5,000 reviews, and over 80% of which have been rated four stars and above, and even a personal trainer has recommended them. Here's what shoppers have to say:
"I have been using these as ankle weights for a couple of months with all the weights in position. They have been very useful in strengthening the muscles in my hips such that I no longer have any discomfort in my joints at night. They are comfortable to wear and stay in position. I am very pleased with them."
"This product was recommended by a physiotherapist for pre- knee operation exercises."
"Great adjustable ankle weights, I have thin limbs and the velcro is long enough to tighten the weights securely on me!"
"I work out regularly with this and I love how it stays wherever I want without shifting around my leg! it wrapped nicely and comfortable enough to stay in place but not so tight. I feel like I'm burning the right amount of calories every time I use this."
"I'm a Personal Trainer. I love these ankle weights, I've ordered two sets for two individual clients, one an elderly lady trying to strengthen her lower body and the other a stroke survivor learning to walk again. The ankle weights are so soft and fit very well around the ankle, you just might struggle to strap them up properly if the person was wearing thick trousers so in that case just put them on underneath. The best part is the option to remove individual sandbags, which are around 300g each, so you can vary the weight from 400g to 1.6kg a side. Also can use as wrist weights for upper body rehab exercises."
