Downton Abbey actor Allen Leech has revealed that the upcoming movie adaptation gives his character "an ending he deserves".

The 37-year-old Irishman portrayed estate manager Tom Branson on the show from 2010 to 2015, but believes his conclusion on the small screen wasn't exactly a satisfying one.

Chatting to HELLO! magazine recently, Allen suggested: "When you think you have said goodbye to a character, to be able to go back is a gift. I felt, and I think a lot of the fans felt, that Tom never got the ending he deserved.

"I am happy to say I think he does in this," he added. "Julian (Fellowes, showrunner) has given Tom such a lovely storyline that it does feel that, if this is when we finally say goodbye, this is the way to say it."

Allen also reflected on what a great time he had collaborating with his old friends again, noting: "It was wonderful to see everyone again when we did the first read-through, to see Maggie Smith and Elizabeth McGovern and Jim Carter.

"It was like a family reunion and I wish it could have gone on longer."

Previously, the star was found discussing the nature of Downton Abbey's time-jump on the cinema screen, explaining that the movie will be set "eight or nine months" after the TV show ended.

The Downton Abbey movie will be released September 13, 2019 in the UK, and September 20, 2019 in the US.
