Beloved London-based brand Alighieri has stepped into the bridal market for the first time, launching a capsule collection of jewellery and accessories for weddings that is anything but ordinary.

The pieces – many of which are available to both buy and rent now – are beautiful and original, designed to make an elegant statement, from silver chokers and cascading pearl earrings to slinky handwoven pieces, including a bralette and veil.

“I wanted it to be magical, but also cool and strong,” Mahtani explains of the launch, pieces of which are aimed not just at brides, but also at bridesmaids and wedding guests.

The collection is launching after a tough year for weddings, but this is part of the reason that Mahtani chose this moment, wanting to celebrate the easing of lockdown with designs that are rooted in the idea of “joining together in the modern world”.

“Alighieri has always been about celebrating the rituals in our customer’s lives,” she says. “A wedding is the ultimate symbol of tying families together through jewellery. After so many months of friends and colleagues having to postpone their weddings, it felt like the perfect moment to launch our bridal capsule: an homage to people coming together again.”

Mahtani also feels that the experience of lockdown may impact how brides choose to dress on their big day, and could lead to more originality and freedom with their looks, something which this collection is perfect for.

“I think this year has opened up the possibilities for wedding looks and wedding days to be whatever the individual desires. As a result of so many couples having to postpone their weddings, the pressure of what it traditionally should be has changed. What is left is the desire to marry your soulmate and make the day exactly what you want, whether that is a stripped-back look or a more extravagant one. I hope this year has encouraged brides to do whichever feels most like them.”

Alighieri is also making it more affordable to get married in these statement pieces by launching a rental service alongside the collection so that more brides have the opportunity to wear one of the statement pieces on their big day. This model of course also embraces a more sustainable approach, something which is key to the Alighieri ethos.

“Rental was such a natural and organic step,” Mahtani says. It allows the statement atelier pieces to be accessible to everyone. I love the idea of each piece being imbued with one woman’s story and then passed onto the next.”

“I think rental has the potential to be a core part of our business as it is a total reflection of our brand ethos: sustainability and storytelling. I find it so wonderful to think about rental as a way of sharing – passing on pieces through cultures and generations, opening up a dialogue across the world.”
