Alicia Keys: 'I've always been a tomboy'

Alicia Keys enjoys dressing like a tomboy because it feels “so good”.

The singer burst onto the music scene with the release of the chart-topping debut album Songs in A Minor in 2001 and she became known for her casual sense of style. Now Alicia has revealed that her wardrobe has always been heavily influenced by her desire to feel comfortable.

“I’ve always been a tomboy. Put me in some jeans and sneakers and I just feel so good,” she said in an interview with The Guardian.

Alicia also says covering up her curves was a way of avoiding “the wrong kind of attention” in the Hell’s City neighbourhood where she grew up in New York City.

“I grew up in a very, very, very… difficult area. First you needed (he right footwear) to be ready to run and secondly, you just needed to (dress in a way) to diffuse that …that ‘energy’," she explained.

While the 40-year-old star still enjoys wearing her favourite jeans and sneakers, she also relished the opportunity to embrace a more feminine side to her style as she found fame in her late teens.

“So, at the beginning I was 17, 18 and as time progressed, I was becoming more of a woman and I was starting to feel an urge and desire to experiment and explore,” she recalled. “You know, what does it feel like to wear these clothes? Mostly it was a nice, natural thing."
