Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez is expected to undergo his Manchester United medical later today ahead of his swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Mkhitaryan agreed terms with the Gunners last night to leave only the formalities of the fitness and health checks to get the deal over the line.

Sanchez was left out of Arsenal’s squad for Saturday’s win over Crystal Palace and he boarded a private jet on Sunday morning to head up to the North West in preparation for his big move.

The switch was on hold while Mkhitaryan’s agent, Mino Raiola, pushed hard to get the best financial package for his client.

“I expect soon or never,” Mourinho said of the deal. “I think is so close, so close, so close that if it doesn’t happen it’s not going to happen so I am positive.

“I know my people is doing everything they can, the owners with the green light, Mr Woodward working hard with Matt Judge and everybody is giving everything they can and I think they are going to be successful.”

Sanchez will add depth to the United squad with the Red Devils’ ranks currently depleted by a number of injuries to key players.

“In this moment there is no competition for places,” Mourinho added. “In this moment we have four attacking players for three positions, three are starting, one is on the bench, Zlatan for the whole season was not available.

“We look to central defenders, played Jones and Smalling, Rojo on the bench, Victor [Lindelof] in the stands, [Eric] Bailly is injured, look to midfield, Fellaini, Herrera and McTominay on the bench, Carrick in the stands.

Mourinho granted his players two days off following their battling 1-0 win over Burnley, with Sanchez likely to meet his new team-mates on Tuesday.

He is eligible to play in the FA Cup when Man United play Yeovil on Friday night.
