Look, if you're not yet acquainted with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, it's time to get up to speed. She's not only a member of the U.S house of representatives (not to mention a complete badass).
Another incredible thing about AOC (the list is long), is that she doesn't shy away from discussing the beauty choices she makes every day - fully understanding (and demonstrating) the importance of beauty when it comes to personal autonomy and expression.
In a recent video with Vogue magazine, she not only delved into her reasons for wearing a bold, red lipstick while at work, but also dropped her entire skincare routine, which comprises toner, vitamin C serum, super-affordable moisturiser and a £5 SPF(!).
While throwing out gold-star recommendations left, right and centre, she had some super important things to say about the importance of beauty in the world of politics, saying:
"So I get questions all the time on my IG stories about my skincare routines and makeup and what I do. And the reason why I think it’s so important to share these things is that, first of all, femininity has power, and in politics there is so much criticism and nitpicking about how women and femme people present ourselves.
Just being a woman is quite politicised here in Washington…. There’s this really false idea that if you care about make-up or if you care, if your interests are in beauty and fashion, that that’s somehow frivolous. But I actually think these are some of the most substantive decisions that we make — and we make them every morning.”
What's more, she also mentions her go-to foundation for full-coverage photo-opp days, and the tinted moisturiser she's obsessed with. But more on that later...
...First, the lipstick.
While applying what looks like Stila's Liquid lipstick in Beso, she chats through why she prefers a liquid lipstick formula, explaining that she feels it's more budge-proof for days when she doesn't have time to be constantly checking her lip-line in the mirror.
And then it comes to the shade, she got real about her reasoning.
"So one of the reasons why I started wearing a red lip, was when I was running in my primary election the first time, and outside of our community no one knew who I was, and we were out, we were knocking doors, we were making sure that people were being heard, and one of the things that I had realised was that when you’re always running around, sometimes the best way to really look put together is a bold lip."
She also delved into the cultural importance of a red lip within her own community, saying:
"And of course, being Latina, this is like very much our culture, where we come from, I will wear a red lip when I want confidence, when I need a boost of confidence"
In case you're keen to follow in AOC's footsteps, here's what I thiiiink she's applying:
Oh, and that full-coverage photo-friendly foundation she mentioned? Of course, it's Double Wear.
And finally, for tinted moisturiser, she's gone for the ultra-glowwy NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser, in Medium 1.
The woman has taste, I'll give her that.
