A decade after joining The One Show, Alex Jones has opened up about being a mum and embracing her 40s.

The mum-of-two just returned to work last month since giving birth to her second son Kit last year.

However, in an interview with Good Housekeeping, she admits she “definitely” wishes she’d taken a longer maternity leave after having her first son Ted three years ago when she took just three months off.

“I’d made unrealistic promises before I went off to have a baby,” she revealed.

“I’d never had a child before; I had no idea. And I had this fear it would interfere, that I’d have to compromise my work life. I now realise that was ridiculous because in fact I think I makes you better at work.

“It makes you a little bit more resilient which is what you have to be in this industry. And in life!”

On whether women can have it all in terms of balancing a career and a young family, Alex doesn't think it's always possible.

“For me personally, some days I don’t think it’s possible," she said in the April issue of Good Housekeeping.

"It’s a struggle. I try to be the best mother I can be, but some days I’m absolutely awful at it. Life isn’t this series of perfect days where work is going amazingly and you’re a brilliant wife…. that’s how it is for everybody I think, but people are just too scared to say it.”

In January, Alex shared a photo of her cuddling her boys, who she shares with her husband Charlie, telling followers she was feeling quite nervous.

“Back to work today. So many different feelings. Anxious about leaving the boys, excited to be back on the show,” she wrote.

The full interview appears in the April issue of Good Housekeeping, on sale now.
