Gucci's creative director Alessandro Michele will take home the Trailblazer Award at the 2021 Fashion Awards, which takes place on Monday night. The designer – who has headed up the Italian label for six years – will be recognised for being a pioneer in the industry. He follows in the footsteps of Kim Jones and Sarah Burton, the previous recipients of the award.

The Trailblazer Award is one of the British Fashion Council's Special Recognition Awards – and celebrates the very best creatives and innovators in the industry.

"Alessandro’s work at Gucci over the last year defines what it means is to be a trailblazer, he is a pioneer in every aspect of his creative output and uses the power of design to pave new paths connecting the fashion industry to all other industries from film to digital innovation," the BFC's chief executive said of the designer. "He is an incredible source of inspiration for many generations to come and we look forward to celebrating with him next week in London."

In just the past 12 months, Michele has created plenty of buzz, including executing an industry first, which saw Gucci "hack" Balenciaga as part of the label's 100-year anniversary collection, Gucci Aria. The collection – which recently went on sale – was undoubtedly one of the most talked-about fashion moments of the year.

The BFC also noted a number of other projects that Michele has worked on this year, commenting on how closely his work aligns with the film industry, highlighting fashion’s critical position at the intersection of culture and art.

Michele will receive his accolade on stage at the Royal Albert Hall on Monday evening, where he will be joined by the biggest names in fashion, including American designer Tommy Hilfiger, who has won the Outstanding Achievement Award. The event will no doubt be an exciting one, marking its real-life return, following a year off due to the pandemic.

And, not only will The Fashion Awards return to its full glamorous format, but will also expand on a more global scale. According to the BFC, the 2021 event will celebrate fashion’s global impact and its role at the intersection of culture.
