Alan Ritchson went through an arduous audition process before he secured the role of action hero Jack Reacher in Amazon's new series, which adapts Lee Child's hugely popular novels. And once he landed the gig, the hard work started: Ritchson then packed on 30 pounds of muscle in order to convincingly play the huge character.

In a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Ritchson explained what exactly the process of gaining weight for the show involved. The short answer being, eating pretty much non-stop while shooting the first season.

"I put on 30 pounds, which is… Have you ever put on 30 pounds? It’s a full-time job to eat enough to put on 30 pounds," he said. "I had an assistant whose only job was to bring me food. It was like a conveyor belt of smoothies and protein."

He went on to add that he was able to have some fun at the same time, as he was training so hard that he could exercise some freedom when it came to his enormous daily calorie intake.

"You can get pretty clever with this," he said. "I would order the crew Popeye’s chicken sandwiches (and) cookies, just so I could get the kind of calories I wanted. It looks like a goodwill gesture. 'Leave a dozen of those in my trailer, please!'"

The results speak for themselves; Ritchson's muscular physique features prominently in the series, which has been so well-received that Amazon has already renewed it for a second season.
