As COVID-19 cases continue to spike in the United States and around the world, Airbnb just announced a new plan to help prevent unauthorized parties and large gatherings on New Year's Eve. The move follows Airbnb's global party ban announced in August and its one-night booking ban during Halloween weekend.

The new plan will apply to the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Australia, France, and Spain. Starting this week, guests in these countries who have don't have a history of positive reviews on Airbnb won't be allowed to make one-night reservations in entire home listings on New Year's Eve. The new restriction doesn't apply to guests who have a history of positive reviews. Already made plans for the holiday? Airbnb is allowing all guests who have already booked one-night reservations on New Year's Eve to keep their reservations.

To supplement the booking restrictions, Airbnb is requiring all guests with successful bookings to attest that they won't throw an unauthorized party. And if guests break the rule, Airbnb may take legal action against them. Airbnb also says that it's providing hosts with guidance on how to reduce the likelihood of unauthorized parties. Plus, there will be a virtual command center for any issues and "trained safety agents on call" throughout New Year's Eve, according to a news release.

"Our hosts are our partners in this mission–and we have carefully developed this New Year’s Eve initiative informed by their feedback along with a review of our data, systems and tools," the news release reads.
