It’s here. Well, almost. Fans of one of the world’s best-selling running shoes, the Adidas Ultraboost will soon be able to get their hands on the latest iteration, version 21. Adidas has today announced that the new shoe will be available from the end of the month in a white and fluorescent yellow colourway, which it says brings to life the theme of high energy. Further limited-edition colour drops will follow.

For those who have long loved the super-bouncy sensation from the Boost midsole foam, you’ll be pleased to hear that v21 has 6% more Boost crammed into it, for extra push off the ground and energy return.

The main upgrade is the addition of a new torsion control system: LEP, which stands for ‘Linear Energy Push’. This is essentially a horseshoe shaped plastic insert which sits underneath the midsole. Because it’s stiff, it acts as a reinforcement says adidas, providing runners with less flex in the forefoot and increased responsiveness - not only to give a snappier push off the ground but also to help subtly guide the foot quicker through the gait cycle and allow less time for overpronation to take place.

The Primeknit upper has been made a little stiffer, while the mesh itself is made with PrimeBlue, which is Adidas’s own high-performance recycled material containing at least 50% Parley Ocean Plastic.

The heel to toe drop remains at 10mm (20.5mm in the forefoot and 30.5mm in the heel) which means that it should still be a great option for the mass market – fur runners who first and foremost want a reliable shoe to ger them through their steady runs while having the adaptability to be suitable for the odd faster session.

Alberto Uncini Manganelli, Senior Vice President, adidas Running, said:

‘Ultraboost has consistently been a unique and sensational blend of iconic design, revolutionary innovations, unparalleled performance and unique consumer experience. It has delighted millions of worldwide users every day, winning their hearts and minds and changing the way they see and feel running.’

Moritz Höllmüller, Senior Design Director Footwear, adidas Running, added: ‘In creating the adidas Ultraboost 21, we have developed our most holistic running shoe ever, that is the ultimate expression of comfort and responsiveness.

‘It takes all the aesthetic ingredients that were part of the original shoe’s DNA and fuses them with the latest technology, such as adidas LEP, to create a shoe that combines all of these great design features with incredible comfort, support and energy return.

‘Ultraboost 21 is a huge statement of intent for the brand. It’s a truly unique product and everything you could possibly want in a running shoe!’

RW has a team of testers putting the shoe through its paces at the moment and we’ll have a full review both on here in the coming weeks and in our April issue Spring/Summer ‘21 Shoe Buyer’s Guide (out at the end of February).

The Adidas Ultraboost 21 will launch on Adidas channels on 28 January and globally on 4 February.
