Everything you need to know about the new Anna Delvey Netflix series

It was only a matter of time before the dramatic story of Anna Sorokin - or Anna Delvey, as she was otherwise known - was optioned for the screen. The con artist attracted international headlines after she managed to trick New York's art elite into believing she was a wealthy heiress, scamming multiple hotels and people in the process. She was eventually arrested and sentenced to between four and 12 years in state prison, fined $24,000, and ordered to pay restitution of about $199,000.

In 2018, Shonda Rhimes and Netflix announced that they would produce the story for the small screen. As more details about the show are revealed, this is what we know about the series so far:

The casting

Julia Garner - known for Ozark, Modern Love and Dirty John - will lead the cast as Anna Sorokin.

Blue Bloods actress Jennifer Eposito will play Talia Mallay - the famous owner of a lavish lifestyle brand "who excels at the social game", Deadline reports.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the cast will also include Veep's Anna Chlumsky, Scandal's Katie Lowes, Orange Is the New Black's Laverne Cox, and The Bold Type's Alexis Floyd. Chlumsky will play a journalist investigating the case, while Lowes will play Rachel DeLoache Williams, Anna's best friend who was scammed out of thousands. Cox is enlisted as Kacy Duke, a celebrity trainer and life coach, who also became embroiled in the scandal. Shonda Rhimes will bring her star production power to the show, having previously worked on Scandal, Bridgerton and Grey's Anatomy.

The plot

The series is based on Jessica Pressler's New York Magazine story, "How Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People". A statement from Netflix reads: "In Inventing Anna, a journalist (Chlumsky) with a lot to prove investigates the case of Anna Delvey (Garner), the Instagram-legendary German heiress who stole the hearts of New York’s social scene — and stole their money as well. But is Anna New York’s biggest con woman or is she simply the new portrait of the American dream? Anna and the reporter form a dark funny love-hate bond as Anna awaits trial and our reporter fights the clock to answer the biggest question in NYC: Who is Anna Delvey?"

The full trailer for the series above introduces us to Delvey (or Sorokin, as we later discover is her real name) as she has her first conversation with the journalist in prison, saying that the claims of her being a criminal are "not her story". It shows us flashbacks of her making her way through New York society, including several clips of her courting investors for an exclusive social club. The trailer also explains, "This story is completely true, except for the parts that are totally made up."

The series will also focus on the journalist's reporting that exposed Delvey instead of just solely on her con work.

How long will it be and when will it air?

Inventing Anna will be shown via 10 episodes and is set to premiere 11 February 2022 on Netflix.
