We've made no secret of our love of Peaky Blinders, which is largely down to the fact we're kind of obsessed with Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy. But did you know Jason Statham was up for the hit BBC role too?
The actor, who is best known for The Fast And Furious film franchise and is engaged to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, met with the crew of Peaky Blinders, but was just pipped to the post by Cillian.
"I met them both in LA to talk about the role and opted for Jason," the show's creator told Esquire magazine. "One of the reasons was because physically in the room Jason is Jason. Cillian, when you meet him, isn’t Tommy, obviously, but I was stupid enough not to understand that.
"Afterwards, he sent me a text saying, 'Remember, I’m an actor.' Which is absolutely the thing because he can transform himself. If you meet him in the street he is a totally different human being."
So Jason effectively lost out because Cillian sent a sneaky text message? Blimey. Always send your job interview follow up emails, kids!
This comes as the show runner also revealed the Peaky Blinders deaths he regrets most, as well as fans anticipating the start of filming season six. The show was put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the BBC sharing a statement at the beginning of March which read:
"After much consideration, and in light of the situation concerning Covid-19, the start of production on Peaky Blinders Series 6 has been postponed. Huge thanks to our incredible cast and crew, and to all our amazing fans for their continued support."
We'll be counting down the days!
