Actor Alec Baldwin has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after he fired a prop gun whilst filming the movie Rust and fatally wounded crew member, Halyna Hutchins. He could now face jail time as a result of the tragedy.

Another member of the crew, director Joel Souza, was also injured after a bullet hit his shoulder.

Baldwin has consistently denied any wrongdoing and formally apologised to Hutchins' family following the incident. Speaking to ABC News in December 2021, he said plainly, "I would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger at them. Never."

Shortly after the shooting, he shared a social media update about being fully cooperative with the subsequent investigation and sharing his sympathies with Hutchins' son and husband.

"There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours," he wrote. "I'm fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna."

Alongside Baldwin, two others from the film set have been charged: first assistant director David Halls pleaded guilty to the charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon, and Hannah Gutierrez Reed, amourer, has also been charged with involuntary manslaughter [via The Independent].

Speaking today [19 January 2023], Santa Fe's District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies announced in a statement that 'nobody is above the law'.

"Actor and producer Alec Baldwin and armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will each be charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter," the statement read. "After a thorough review of the evidence... I have determined that there is sufficient evidence."

"On my watch, no one is above the law, and everyone deserves justice."

If convicted, Baldwin could serve up to eighteen months in jail.
