Acne-prone? You Need These Oil-free SPFs

From Women's Health

If the ever-increasing prevalence of products designed to tackle acne – from charcoal soaps to LED treatments – is anything to go by, then persistent skin issues are a drama for a lot of us.

While we know that we should be wearing a minimum of SPF 30 on our faces everyday (that's according to the British Association of Dermatologists), when you're dealing with an oily complexion, this can often take a back seat.

And that's where oil-free SPF comes in. A host of brands, from bargain to dermatologist level, are creating formulas designed to save your face from breakouts.

Here's the WH edit.

Best oil-free SPF for an active holiday: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Pocket Sun Cream SPF50+30ml, £8.50

It's easy to picture sunscreen as something heavy to (remember) and lug around in your beach bag but La Roche-Posay has made it so easy with this pocket size edition. Aesthetically pleasing and great for those oily T-zones. No excuse not try!

Best oil-free SPF for the city-dweller: Clarins UV Plus Anti-Pollution SPF 50 Day Cream, 30ml, £32.50

If you live in a hustling city with basically no clean air, it's easy for your skin to feel clogged up. Instead of booking a facial regularly or trying a DIY face mask at home, try this preventative anti-pollution SPF by Clarins after your face cream and before your makeup.

Best oil-free SPF if you hate rubbing creams in: Bioderma Photoderm Mineral SPF50+ Spray 100g, £16.50

If slathering on a sunscreen doesn't tick any boxes for you, this refreshing spray from iconic skincare brand Bioderma should have you covered.

Best oil-free SPF to add a dewy sheen: Vichy Idéal Soleil Velvety Cream SPF 50+ 50ml, £16.50

There's this myth that those with darker skin tone don't need to wear SPF but sun damage can happen to anyone with any skin colour. Plus if you are darker skinned, you'll most likely to scar more from previous breakouts and SPF can be a way to get rid of acne marks so this creamy texture by Vichy is ideal for a dewy look.

Best oil-free SPF for all over your body: CeraVe Moisturising Lotion 236ml, SPF 25, £9

This is only SPF 25 and, for your face especially, you want to be looking at 30 minimum – whatever your skin tone. But this formula is great for slathering over your forearms and legs for UK days – just make sure you use a stronger product up top.

Best oil-free SPF if you're prone to a shiny face: Dermalogica Oil-Free Matte SPF 30, £44.50

If you prefer having a matte base, this Dermalogica oil-free option may be the one for you. Designed for combination to oily skin types, this helps prevent shine, regulate oil production and soothe inflammation without making you skin appear dull. We have a winner.

Best oil-free SPF to deal with ageing skin: Clinique SPF40 Face Cream 50ml, £18

If using anti-ageing products is on your mind, this classic Clinique SPF cream is made with SolarSmart technology that fights the burning effects of UVA and UVB rays. It's also designed for sensitive skin.

Best oil-free SPF if you need extra high protection: Avene Cleanance SPF50+ 50ml, £16

For the only 50-and-up-SPF-gang, this high protection Avene option will have you covered. Though it's made for the original purpose of protecting your skin, it's also a non-greasy and non-irritant lotion for those with blemish-prone skin.

Best oil-free SPF if you deal with hyperpigmentation: Dr Dennis Gross Dark Spot Sun Defense Broad Spectrum SPF50+, £44

To toast under the sun can feel like such a delight and a sign that summer is finally here however the damage that comes with sunbathing may last longer than those harsh rays in the middle of the day. The reason why Dr Dennis Gross SPF cream is so popular, it claims to undo the damage so you can have just the memories. Why did no-one tell us before?
